The 2010-11 School Year Begins with many Changes
Tuesday, 24 August 2010

A new school year has brought new faces and many new changes to Jordan High School.  Mr. Gregory A. Newlin (pictured left at a reception held at Jordan) assumed the principalship in July after Richard Webber retired.  Mr Newlin comes to Jordan from Lexington High School where he had served as principal since 2006. Ms. Lori Lawrence also joined Jordan as a new assistant principal after working as an assistant principal with Mr. Newlin at Lexington High.

In addition to leadership changes, many teachers have switched rooms enabling most of the Freshman Academy to locate to the 200 hall and to alleviate the issue of teachers who had to "float" from room to room.

Advisee this year will be conducted through 2nd period classes.  Alphabetical lists of advisee classes will be posted in the main lobby and along the guidance hall on the first day of school.  Students will receive an official class schedule during advisee.

National Honor Society Completes Final Projects
Tuesday, 08 June 2010

On Saturday, May 22nd, the National Honor Society worked on their final service projects for Jordan High School. One project was the beautification of a plot on the Jordan campus while another project involved students boxing care packages to send to soldiers in Afghanistan. We would like to thank all the donations that went into the beautification project, including two Japanese maples and other shrubs donated by the family of senior Emily Palmer.  Senior Malissa Gornto spearheaded the care package project because her family sends items to her brother,Justin Gornto, a Jordan graduate. “This idea came about,” says Emily, “because even though care packages typically go toward a certain troop member, they usually end up sharing because not all troops receive packages.”  Good work, Falcons!

Project 10,000 Hits Goal in Support of N.C. Food Bank
Friday, 04 June 2010

Project 10,000, our school-wide  "students against hunger" project to benefit the North Carolina Food Bank has officially collected over 8,500 canned food items and logged over 1,500 volunteer hours!  Led by the students in the Poverty in America classes, teacher Brian McDonald noted back in September that they decided to do the project “because we can, because we should and because there are people around us who need our help.”  The Food Bank distributes food to people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in our area, or more than 480,000 people, 45% of whom are children and the elderly.

The project recently completed a three-week competition among 10 teachers on the 200 hall during 3rd period classes. Social studies teacher Don Jones’ two AP U.S.History classes won, collecting 655 canned items, nearly 16 items per person. Among other contributors during the school year were the Tri-M music festival which raised almost $200 in items and the baseball team which donated 100 items.
