Students Learn How Math is Used in the Real World |
|
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 |
|
“When am I ever going to use this?” Math teachers hear it all the time, so Christian Jones, Advanced Functions and Modeling teacher, and Christine Betts, A.P Statistics teacher, invited Ed Suffern, a senior engineer at IBM, to make a presentation to their classes showing how mathematics is used in the real world.

Along with other examples, Suffern showed how math is used to model weather and predict the occurrence of tornadoes. He then explained how engineers calculate stress on an airplane wing to decide the best material choice for the wings.
“We think the students really enjoyed his presentation and learned how math really does affect real-world situations,” says Jones. Hopefully, Suffern’s examples helped answer the question, “When am I ever going to use this.” |
